Image description

Harold C. Standiford, Deputy Director of the Medical Care Center at VA Maryland Health Care System and Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine presents new data on a clinical test of Zyvox(TM) (linezolid), the first of a new class of antibiotics which suggests that the compound is active against gram-positive bacteria, including those resistant to other antibiotics after a news conference in Berlin March 23. Clinical study data were presented during a symposium held at the 9th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID). These data suggest that Zyvox may hold promise in the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections and community-acquired pneumonia caused by gram-positive organisms. Zyvox, being developed by U.S. company Pharmacia & Upjohn, comes from the oxazolidinone class, the first new class of antibiotics in more than 30 years. FAB/WS
