Hessenberg Collection 2: Footage of an African township, South Africa, 1936

Film taken by Leon Levson of an African township (possibly Sophiatown) in the mining area close to Johannesburg. Includes footage of poor quality housing, an African funeral in large cemetery near railway line and mining spoil heap, a marching band (possibly military) near an army camp. There are further views of the township showing the contrast between the most impoverished area and the better neighbourhoods. Footage shows life on the streets with local people and small children. The film ends with some shots of St Josephs Mission Children's home, and the rondavel which was the home of the Reverend Michael Scott. Creator: Leon Levson
