Inscription, Marble Street, Ephesus

The ancient Greek and Roman city of Ephesus is located on the west coast of Asia Minor. In Roman Times, Ephesus had some 250,000 citizens. Ephesus was destroyed by the Goths in 263 AD, but still existed during the Byzantine period. The symbolic Engraving in the pavement of the Marble Street is showing the way to the town Brothel in a teasing manner. Regarded as one of the oldest advertisements ever to be found, the carving onto the pavement is dated to Early Byzantine Times (circa 4th-8th centuries AD). Seen is the shape of a women's head, shape of a left bare foot, and what appears to be a heart.
