Isambard Kingdom Brunel, English engineer, January 1858. Detail of a larger print showing Brunel (1806-1859) with Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) and Lord Alfred Paget at the final launching of the steamship 'Great Eastern'. Brunel was the chief engineer of the Great Western Railway (GWR) from 1833 to 1858, for whom he designed many bridges and viaducts, including the Royal Albert Bridge, Cornwall, and Clifton Suspension Bridge. In 1835, Brunel had the idea of extending the Great Western Railway line westwards by means of a steamship route across the Atlantic from Bristol to New York. To this end he designed the 'Great Western', the 'Great Eastern' and the 'Great Britain' steamships. ©SSPL/National Railway Museum
