Image title
Located in Bonogram, these sets of buildings are set for demolition paving the way for new modern flats. The news does not rest well with Sumitra debi, who has been an inhabitant of this locality for sixty years. She thinks that demolishing the buildings will not just cause a loss in the locality but also damage the whole neighbourly spirit that is prevalent at the moment. But on the other hand -726 buildings are among 3,000 structures in the city Rajuk and Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) marked as highly risky. A six-storey brick and lime building that collapsed june 20, 2004 killing 11 people was among the 32 built without any design. But unofficial sources said the number is much higher because Rajuk enlists an old building as vulnerable only when someone complaints about it. The predawn collapse of the building No. 81, which was one of the risky structures, is the latest incident that replays a 1982 collapse of the house No. 10 in Shankhari Bazar that killed seven people. Although some residents are interested in building new structures, most of them are in a dilemma as each building has a number of owners. 'Not everyone can afford to reconstruct new buildings as all owners do not have the same financial capacity, nor the same mindset,' said Pankaj Dhar, a resident of Shankhari Bazar. 'If the authorities help us financially, it could be possible to avoid another shock.'. (photo)
