The Rock, which is 10 miles off the coast of Scotland, is submerged by the tide twice a day. Many ships were wrecked, claiming hundreds of seamen's lives, until a lighthouse was built. The Bell Rock Lighthouse, built to Robert Stevenson's (1772-1850) design, has lasted into the 21st century.
