May 05, 1954 - The girl from Australia who laughs at Disaster: Six months ago seventeen year old Claire Stacy travelled with her mother from Adelaide, Australia to England for operations on the amputation of both legs and the fitting of artificial limbs. A fund was started in Adelaide to pay for the operation and journey - for Claire, who is the second eldest of a family of four has had trouble with her legs since childhood, owing to a rare breakdown in her bodily chemistry her bones would not set properly. Now she is looking forward to the day - in the not too distant future - when she can walk etc.. on her artificial limbs.. She is very cheerful and happy in spite of her difficulties
