NEW RECRUITS HEAD FOR TRAINING OUTSIDE KHARTOUM, 1998-10-23 (photo)

A truckload of university students who were mobilized as part of a huge recruitment drive by the Sudanese Army head towards a training camp on the outskirts of the capital October 23. The University of Khartoum has closed down and thousands of civil servants have been recruited as part of what analysts say is the biggest military mobilization in the 15 year civil war. Aid agencies will be testifying in front of the United Nations Security Council next week to discuss the humanitarian cost of the 15 year civil war in Sudan which has left an estimated 1.5 million dead and four million displaced.
