Packet of Sweet Afton fine cut rolling tobacco, 1999. Tobacco named after Robert Burns ballad Afton Water. The tobacco is sealed inside a multi-laminate pouch for freshness. Made by P J Carroll and Co Ltd, Ireland. Medical research, which linked tobacco smoking with a lengthening list of health hazards including lung cancer and heart disease, led to active measures to reduce cigarette use. Manufacturers responded to anti-smoking measures by offering reduced tar cigarettes and restrictions on tobacco advertising in the UK led to alternative marketing methods such as sending free gifts to smokers. ©SSPL/Science Museum
