A pre-operation photograph December 30 shows the tumor-filled body of Lori Hoogewind before the removal of the 200 pound tumor. Doctors at the University of Chicago performed an 18-hour operation on Hoogewind, who suffers from an incurable disorder called neurofibromatosis, which is often called Elephant Man's disease after the famous Englishman John Merrick. The surgery required 120 units of blood, more than six times the body's normal blood volume, and the replacement of 40 per cent of Hoogewind's skin that was also lost during the procedure. GAC/HB
