PRIEST PLAYS AMAZING GRACE FOR WALTER LAGRAND, 1999-03-09 (photo)

Minister L. Ignacio Gameros (R), from the Diocese of Tucson, Arizona, plays Amazing Grace on a portable keyboard during the burial ceremony for German citizen Walter LaGrand at the state prison cemetary, March 8. The prison's senior chaplain Errol Grant, (third from right), oversaw the ceremony. Walter, who was executed in the gas chamber March 3 for the murder of a bank manager in Marana, Arizona, in 1982, was buried next to his brother Karl who was executed by lethal injection for the same crime on February 24. The LaGrand's foster parents, Betty and James Barstow, attended the ceremony with nine other officials of the corrections department. The LaGrand's are buried with approximately 300 other prisoners who have died or have been executed at the prison since 1910. JT
