PROTESTERS JUMP IN FRONT OF BONFIRE DURING COUP ANNIVERSARY IN SANTIAGO, 1973-09-11 (photo)

Protesters jump in front of a bonfire blocking a street in Santiago September 11 on the 25th anniversary of the coup d'etat in which former chief of army General Augusto Pinochet toppled Socialist President Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973. Although police have received strict orders from the government to break up any protests, hundreds of people gathered blocks away from the presidential palace to remember the death of Allende who allegedly committed suicide the same day of the coup, and the more than 3,000 people who were disappeared or tortured during Pinochet's dictatorship until 1990.
