Image description

The crossbred offspring of a female llama and male dromedary camel, Rama the "cama" nuzzles veterinarian Lulu Skidmore, of Kent, England, at Sheikh Mohammed's Camel Reproduction Centre January 12. Rama is healthy and at 124 kg (5.5 kg at birth) and 43.5 inches (1.1 m) tall marks his first birthday January 14. The cama was bred as part of a project started three years ago to try to recreate the original animal which evolved into the camel in north Africa and llama in South America when continents shifted 30 million years ago.
