Image description

Richard Quain, Irish surgeon, 1883. Chromolithograph by Vincent Brooks Day and Son Ltd of a caricature by Leslie Ward, better known as Spy, from 'Vanity Fair' magazine. Richard Quain (1800-1887) was born in Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland, where he was a surgeon's apprentice. He studied at the Aldersgate School of Medicine in London, before travelling to Paris to attend the lectures of the anatomist Richard Bennett. When Bennett took up a post as demonstrator of anatomy at the University of London (now University College London), Quain became his assistant. Following Bennett's death in 1830, Quain became senior demonstrator of anatomy, and later surgeon and special professor of clinical surgery at the University College Hospital in 1848. At the time of his death he was one of Queen Victoria's surgeons-extraordinary. ©SSPL/Science Museum
