Image description

Robert Lucas Chance, glass manufacturer, c 1850. Carte de visite photograph by Sarony, Hill & Thrupp of Robert Lucas Chance of Chance Bros & Co (1832-1981), a firm of glass manufacturers in Smethwick, Birmingham. Chance bought the Spon Lane Glassworks of the British Crown Glass Company in 1824, and gave his name to the company when he was joined in 1832 by his brother William. In 1834 Chance introduced the IMPROVED CYLINDER SHEET technique using a German process which gave finer quality and larger panes. This glass was used to glaze Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace in London. The process was used until early in the 20th century. ©SSPL/Science Museum
