SCENE IN DOWNTOWN WASHINGTON WHERE SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE FOUND, 1998-03-26 (photo)

Police and emergency vehicles close off a four square block area of downtown Washington late March 26 after a suspicious package was discovered near the Treasury Building. The gallon plastic container, labelled as a dangerous chemical, was found near a public telephone booth at the corner of 15th Street and New York Avenue, law enforcement officials said. Local police, as well as FBI and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents were on the scene, which is a block from the White House, while a hazardous materials team investigated the container.
