Solar-powered cooker, 1953. A solar-powered cooker designed by M L Ghai at the National Physical Laboratory of India in New Delhi in 1953. This simple cooker consists of a cast-iron base connected to an aluminium reflector and a wire-mesh cooking stand, and was intended for use in remote settlements. The reflector reflects light from the Sun onto the cooking stand, which heats up to cook the food. Made by Devidayal Metal Industries of Bombay, India. ©SSPL/Science Museum
