Striking coal miners, 1942. A photograph of striking coal miners on their way to court in Canterbury, Kent, taken by Calcraft for the Daily Herald newspaper on 24 January, 1942. Fifty miners, representing 1600 men on strike at Betteshanger Colliery near Deal in Kent, went to court in support of their colleagues but saw three of their leaders sent to prison for taking part in an illegal stoppage of work. Tudor Davies, chairman of Betteshanger branch of the Kent Mineworkers Association and Isaac Methuen, a member of the branch committee, were sentenced to one month's hard labour. William Powell, secretary of the branch committee, got 2 month's hard labour. 1,001 other men were fined between £1 and £3. ©SSPL/NMeM/Daily Herald Archive
