The Pick of the Pixies', washing machine, c 1920s. Advertisement for the 'Supreme Princess' washing and wringing machine made by L G Hawkins of 30-35 Drury Lane, London WC2 in the 1930s. The company moved to Hastings in the 1950s and was incorporated into the Pye-Ecko Group in the early 1960s, becoming a Philips UK subsidiary in c 1977. It specialised in the design and manufacture of small electrical goods, such as hairdryers and teamakers. The advertisement appears to be aimed at the Canadian market as it claims that 'All ÒSupreme washers are British-made throughout in Canada'. The illustration promotes the machine's versatility, its ability to wash 24 sheets an hour, and running costs of one penny every four hours. ©SSPL/Science Museum
