The ships belonged to the pirate, Bartholomew Roberts, who captured 11 slave ships near the city of Whydah on the West African coast in January 1722. CBR: Welsh buccaneer known as Black Bart (although not in his lifetime), he was very successful as a pirate in the Caribbean. Born c. May 17, 1682 - February 10, 1722. From an engraving in 'A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates' by Captain Charles Johnson, London, 1725 edition.
