Image description

Ships are shown anchored in Seaham Harbour, which had opened in 1831, the year before this view was painted. The harbour was financed by Lord Londonderry to provide a convenient port for his coalmines in County Durham. One of the sailing ships is named 'LADY FRANCES VANE' on the stern. This was the name of Lord Londonderry's wife, and the coalmines were part of her marriage dowry. Another ship flies a flag marked 'SEAHAM'. Robert Mackreth was a tax inspector and amateur artist. He moved to Newcastle from Kent in 1823.
