Image description

View of the Louvre in Paris The Louvre is a major work of the French Renaissance and Mannerism. Pierre Lescot built a Renaissance castle for Francis I in 1546. It was not until the 17th century that the courtyard ('Cour Carre') was finished. Under Napoleon I and Napoleon III, the castle was further expanded. In 1793 the Louvre became a public museum. The main entrance to the Louvre leads through the 21-metre-high glass pyramid of the architect Ieoh Ming Pei in the Napoleon Cour.
