Sep. 09, 1953 - The Case of the Vanished Soldier. The Mystery of Derek Shaw: Derek Shaw a British Soldier is said to have deserted the British Army in the Canal Zone on April 13th. He was arrested by Egyptian authorities while sleeping in Ismailia Gardens and when questioned by police he said that he was an American - and that his name was John William Duffrey - without permission. After this had been proved to have been lies - Shaw said that he lied because he did not want to get back to barracks as he had been treated badly - and that he was against the” Imperialistic freedom and liberty. His photograph - a picture of Shaw wearing a beard - was recognized by Shaw's father who lives in Corsham, Wilshire
