On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "T. E. Brown's birthplace (centre distance). The Old Douglas Grammar School in New Bond Street, later St. Matthew's Hall. Rev. Robert Brown, the poet's father, was Master of the school and chaplain of St. Matthew's from 1817 to 1832. T. E. Brown was born in the schoolhouse adjoining the school, on 5th May, 1830. The Old School was established by Bishop Wilson in a house given for the purpose in 1714 by William Dickson, Alderman of Dublin, a native of Douglas. It ceased in 1837. 1897. Matt Cain (baker) Left. Estab. 1839.-still in the family. Next on Right, Bell [?], baker, previously Quine, and prior Creer. Hoist for sacks on right of house. Messrs. Creer and Quine became wealthy in this old shop. Creer,- father of J. J. Creer."
