Mahé is a former French trading post located in the Kerala state; the city owes its name to a young captain called Mahé de Labourdannais who conquest the place for France in 1724, its former name was Mayyazhi which means "eyebrow of the sea"; the French settlement lasted until 1954 when Mahé was integrated as a municipality in the Union Territory of Pondicherry; Mahé is now a small seafront town of 36 000 inhabitants which live with fishing and maritime activities; one funny thing about this city, more often than not you can hear French words in the local slang as reminiscent of the French cultural influence; Mahé is also famous for its long heavenly sandy beaches and for the Mahé Pali, a pilgrimage centre for Christians
