TO ACCOMPANY FEATURE STORY AUSTRALIA-PEARL, OF HEADSTONES IN THE HISTORIC JAPANESE CEMETARY IN BROOME, WESTERN AUSTRALIA. The remains of nearly 1,000 Japanese who worked in the racist and tough pearl diving industry in Australia's tropical resort town of Broome, western Australia, in the early 20th century, lay buried in Broome's Japanese cemetery. Many lost their lives due to drowning, in cyclones, or because of the "bends". Hundreds of headstones were originally carved from coloured beach rock, with many restored with traditional Japanese black granite. Picture taken June 12, 2001.
