UMPIRE RICK REED MOTIONS TO OFFERMAN IN THE TENTH INNING, 1999-10-14 (photo)

After a short argument with umpire Rick Reed (R), Boston Red Sox Jose Offerman is motioned off the field after he was called out in the 10th inning of game one of the ALCS, October 13. In a key play of the game, second base, Reed ruled Offerman out but on seeing the video replay after the game said he had made a mistake. New York Yankees' second baseman Chuck Knoblauch (behind Offerman) had not established control of the ball when he tried for a double play in the top of the 10th inning as Offerman slid into second on a grounder by John Valentin. The play stopped a Boston rally and the Yankees won the game 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning. PTB/HB
