The siege gun 'Long Cecil' was constructed at the workshops of De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. This view shows six men standing beside it, including William Berry and George Labram, the designer. The work commenced in 1899, the gun was proved in 1900 and went into action on January 23rd, 1900. The gun was a Rifled Breechloader of 4.1 inches calibre, 10 feet long. It fired a 29 lb shell and had a range of 10,000 yards. In 1902, during Cecil Rhodes' funeral procession in Cape Town, his coffin was carried on top of the Long Cecil carriage. Today the gun is located on the stylobate (facing the Free State) of the Honoured Dead Memorial in Kimberley. Berry collection
