Wedding of Juan Carlos and Sophia

In this film, shot at Irodou Attikou Street, we watch the official procession for the marriage of the successor to the Spanish Throne Juan Carlos and Princess Sophia of Greece. We watch the members of the royal families leaving the palace in their cars, followed by the royal carriage. We then see their return. The marriage of the Spanish Throne's successor Juan Carlos and Princess Sophia of Greece was performed both according to the Catholic and Orthodox doctrine in Athens on May 14, 1962. The Catholic marriage took place at the St. Dionysius Church, which we watch at the film. The marriage has created a political problem in Greece that put the Karamanlis government in a difficult position, as Queen Fredericka of Greece pressured the Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis to set a large amount of public money for her daughter's dowry. On February 19, 1962, Finance Minister Spyros Theotokis submitted to Parliament a bill granting Sofia a dowry of 9,000,000 drachmas (approximately $2,500,000 of today's value) that was exempt from all taxation and could be converted into foreign currency. This decision caused a lot of reactions.
