Window Protection', Wills cigarette card, 1938. One of a series of 'Air Raid Precautions' cards. This one illustraties the various layers that should be placed over a window to prevent the glass being shattered by the force of a bomb blast. These include whitewash, shutters, cushions, a thick blind and finally a grid to be screwed to the frame. Despite widely being regarded as a useful source of instruction, production of cigarette cards was halted during both World Wars due to shortages. ©SSPL/Science Museum
