This cover, accepted by the Academy on 30 April and read at the meeting of 3 December 1877, attests that it was Charles Cros, poet and inventor (in Fabrezan in 1842, died in Paris in 1888) who introduced the principle of the phonograph, before Edison, who did not file the definitive patent for his invention until January 1878.
