Francesco Morosini bombarding the Parthenon, 1687. For about thirty years (1686-1715) the Venetians occupied the Morea and were supreme in Greek waters. Their successes were mainly due to one man, Francesco Morosini, whose great abilities are not sufficient to remove the stain upon his name for having bombarded the Parthenon, the most perfect building ever wrought by man. Up to this period it had stood unharmed through all changes of creeds and rulers, and but for this outrage would probably be in as good a condition now as is the Theseion.
