U.S. peacekeepers walk behind a mines warning hung on barbed wire along the path of the Minefield Marathon at Bagram air base November 29, 2002 as over 150 members of the Coalition Joint Task Force "Enduring Freedom", the majority from the U.S. Army, run a marathon organised by U.S. forces through a path around the base which is surrounded by mines. Afghanistan is one of the most heavily mined countries on earth and at Bagram alone, some 15,000 mines remain scattered on the base and its perimeter - despite an estimated 7,000 mines that military units have cleared since late last year.
