Image description

Fu'ad Hussein Haider speaks to reporters in a police station after his arrest in Baghdad June 28. Haider, a 38-year-old Iraqi car mechanic, is alleged to have shot dead two U.N. staff members at the Food and Agriculture Organisation's mission in Baghdad on Wednesday saying he had not intended to open fire and did so only when Iraqi government guards fired at him. He said he had merely planned to take FAO staff hostage until his demands were met. In addition to the dead, up to seven other staff were wounded. Haider said his gesture was a protest at the U.N. sanctions imposed on Iraq for its 1990 invasion of Kuwait and his demands were aimed at alleviating the effects of the embargo. FK/JDP
