This picturesque ruined castle at Ardchonnel was built on an island in Loch Awe in Scotland in the 13th century. Romantic novels of Scottish history by Sir Walter Scott helped make views of Scotland very popular in the 19th century. This scene has mostly been drawn directly with the paintbrush, with very little pencil drawing. White trunks of saplings have been used to draw the viewer's gaze towards the castle. The artist Thomas Miles Richardson, Junior has used his characteristic style of fairly bright opaque watercolour.
