Image description

‘PROSPECT vom FORT ST GEORGE von der Sud West Seithe, aufgenommen unter DIRECTION des HERRN MAJOR OFFENEY, XV Hannöver/ Infanterie Regiment Anno 1787’. Watercolour drawing by Sergeant Johann Jacob Ludwig Rothmeyer, 15th Hanöverian Regiment, 1787 (c). Fort St George was established in 1639 as a defended commercial post for the East India Company’s spice trade. It was the second permanent Company trading post, and was once described as 'the most incommodious place I ever saw'. The popular story is that the company's buyer, Francis Day, bought the exposed and waterless tract of land because he had a mistress nearby, and wanted their 'interviews' to be 'more frequent and uninterrupted'. It soon became a major port, shipping spices, silks, opium and many other Indian goods. It was also an important military base.
