The Mariinsky Theatre was built on the order of Alexander II by the architect A K Kavos. The name commemorates Alexander's consort, Maria Alexandrovna. The Imperial Theatres were built and maintained from the Tsar's privy purse and enjoyed strong Imperial patronage and support. In front is the monument to the composer Glinka by R R Bach, erected in 1906. The season always began with a performance of Glinka's patriotic opera 'A Life for the Tsar'.
