Image description

From the anti-Semitic cartoon series, the Politische Bilderbogen (Political Pictures). During a series of lectures in the USA, Mr. Sargent, an envoy of the US House of Representatives, asked Otto von Bismarck to receive a letter of condolence from the House of Representatives on the occasion of the death of the liberal politician Laskers on January 25, 1884 . Since Lasker was a political opponent of the Prince, the latter was offended by the statement that Lasker's "firm and steadfast representation of and devotion to free and liberal ideas has substantially improved the social, political and economic conditions of this nation" and rejected the letter with the remark that he was not a postman for the Reichstag. Bismarck was perceived by many early anti-Semites as a prominent campaigner for his antagonism to Jews, although he was merely an opportunist. Thus, in this anti-Semitic cartoon, he is also directly illuminated by sunbeams shining through the treetops and depicted as avenger for Virgin Mary crouching before the tribune with her son Christ lying in her arms, killed by Jews.
