A passenger jet from Uni Air, a local subsidiary of Taiwan's ambitious EVA Airways, descends past Taipei's hulking Grand Hotel toward the capital's municipal airport January 21. EVA is pushing ahead with an ambitious passenger and cargo expansion despite the regional financial turmoil that has battered Asian tourism -- forcing many other Asian airlines to cut back on services and lay off workers.
