Rathausplatz / Town Hall Square (colour litho)

Rathausplatz. Wie heute noch standen die Rathauser auch fruher auf freiem Platze, auf dem Markt abgehalten wurde. In Suddeutschland waren sie aus Hausteinen gebaut, im Norden uberwog der Backsteinbau mit reich durchbrochener Fassade. Vor dem Rathaus befand sich meist die Staupsaule, an der die Ubeltater als abschreckendes Beispiel gestaupt und zur Schau gestellt wurden. Translation: Town Hall Square. In southern Germany they were built of stone, in the north brick buildings with richly openwork facades predominated. In front of the town hall there was usually the traffic jamming column, on which the offenders were jammed and put on display as a deterrent.
