Image description

‘Description of the Armies of Horse and Foot of His Majesties, and Sir Thomas Fairefax, his Excellency, as they were drawn into battayle at Nasbye; the Fowerteenth day of June 1645’. Engraving by Streeter, from Joshua Sprigge’s ‘Anglia Rediviva’ (England’s Recovery), published by John Partridge, 1647. This plan of the Battle of Naseby on 14 June 1645 was engraved for a book by Sir Thomas Fairfax’s chaplain, Joshua Sprigge. It shows both armies to be of an equal size. In reality the Royalists were 9,000 strong and heavily outnumbered by the 13,500 strong Parliamentarian Army. The etching shows a portrait of Sir Thomas Fairfax in the top right hand corner.
