The Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, one of the members of the Austrian-German group to be first to have climbed the Eiger north face, shows the route of the first ascent on a photo in a hotel near Grindelwald, Switzerland, pictured on July 24, 1938. Harrer completed the first ascent of the Eiger north face with mountaineers Andreas Heckmair, Ludwig “Wiggerl” Voerg and Fritz Kasparek in July 1938 and became world-famous.
