SP Federal Councillor Willi Ritschard with his wife on holiday in Brissago on 24 July 1979. Ritschard was elected to the Federal Council on 5 December 1973 as a representative of Canton Solothurn. By profession heating engineer, he was the first and so far only worker in the Federal Council. During his term of office, he headed the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications and the Federal Department of Finance. He was German President in 1978. After he announced his resignation on October 3, 1983 as of December 31, Willi Ritschard died completely unexpectedly on a hike due to heart failure.
