Switzerland Zurich 80 Movement, 1980 (b/w photo)

On 17 June 1980 in Zurich, a demonstration marched from the university to the education department with slogans against the government councillor Alfred Gilgen, “When will the Gilb finally yellow” or “Exterminate the Gilgen”. The protests are directed against censorship measures taken by the director of education, Gilgen, against a video screening at the university on the opera house riots. The 'youth riots' in Zurich began on May 30, 1980 with protests against the subsidization of the opera house, as millions were spent on the 'established' but little on 'alternative' culture. The 'opera house riot' was the prelude to a wave of violent clashes and a broad youth movement.
