Image title
Portait of the 'Kampveere' (?), c.1664 (offset, graphite, grey wash)
Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
A ship of the Zeeland Admiralty, built in 1653, 48-guns. Its history is not known but it is not the ship referred to by the English as the 'Arms of Terver' when captured in 1673. The drawing depicts the ports on the broadside: around ten on the gundeck, ten on the upper deck, and two on the quarterdeck. It is shown from the starboard lee quarter before a quartering wind under fore course, mizzen and fore and main topsails. On the tafferel are the arms of Zeeland on a crowned oval shield supported by two lions rampant guardant. There are undetermined arms between dolphins on the rail above and a view of a town on the counter. The Boymans Museum, Rotterdam, has an offset (not in reverse) from the same original as this drawing (no. 232-1120), inscribed 'tship der veere'. The NMM drawing is a faint offset, rubbed on the back and also not in reverse, worked up in pencil and wash with considerable alterations. In spite of the corrections in the luff it still looks too long. The shaking sails, which have replaced the furled sails of the original, are in rapid pencil and bold wash. The work has been dated to 1664-1665 by the subject and watermark.
