This view is thought to show Whitehaven, in Cumbria. The working character of the scene was an unusual quality for a landscape painting at this time. The subdued, but warm and harmonious, colours of the picture are characteristic of Peter De Wint's style. The blue-grey washes of the sky suggest damp air - De Wint's introduction of atmospheric effects was an important innovation in early 19th century landscape watercolours. De Wint was based in the south of England, but made many sketching journeys around the country.
