The Lactee Way - Milky Way and Atacama Andes - The Lactee Way over the Atacama Desert. Visible on the horizon near the middle of the image the Chajnantor (5639m) and its platform or the ALMA radio telescope is currently under construction. Mosaic with 3 images placed 1 minute each. June 2008. The Milky Way is rising majestically above the Chilean Atacama Andes in the San Pedro de Atacama region. Most of the peaks visible in the landscape background have altitudes above 5000m and even 6000m for some of them. Almost in the middle of the image are the Chajnantor mountain (5639 m) and plateau (5300 m) where the ALMA radio telescope project is being built. Note that is image is a one-shot image (in fact a mosaique made of 3 one-shot images), there is no background/foreground composition made here, or composition of pictures made with different exposure times etc... instead, the author choose the date and time at which the picture was taken in order to have the landscape and observer lit up

Light from ionised nitrogen (through the F660N filter) is coloured green and light through a yellow filter (F550M) is coloured blue. The exposure times through each filter are 1560 s, 1600 s and 400 s respectively. The blue - white flare at the upper - left of the image is scattered light from a bright star just outside the field of view. The field of view is about 3.3 by 1.7 arcminutes

Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy NGC 4651 in Coma Berenices - The galaxy NGC 4651 (Arp 189) is located about 50 million years away - light from Earth. The Umbrella Galaxy (NGC 4651 or Arp 189) exhibits a jet like spear that's strikingly coherent and narrow. The structure was previously reported by Boris Vorontsov Velyaminov in 1959 but never interpreted as a stellar tidal stream. This deep image additionally shows a spectacular crescent shaped shell surrounding the east side of the star system that corresponds to the apocenter of the dwarf galaxy. Interestingly, a possible second arc on the western side of the galaxy can also be seen in this image. This feature is less obvious because it's partially hidden by the galaxy's disk and suggests we are observing a moderately inclined structure projected into the halo of NGC 4651. This image was produced by combining an hour of exposure through the Isaac Newton Telescope, located on the Spanish island of La Palma, wit

Spiral galaxy M74 in Pisces - Spiral galaxy M74 in Pisces - Image of the spiral galaxy M74 (NGC 628). This galaxy is about 80,000 light years and is 30 million light years apart. Viewed face on, as it appeared about 30 million years ago, M74 is considered to be one of the most photogenic spiral galaxies in the sky. The galaxy is rich in young bright blue stars and glowing red regions of dust and molecular hydrogen where new stars are being created. M74, however, is quite camera shy - it has a low surface brightness that makes it challenging for both visual observers and astrophotographers to see it's entire form. The Chandra X - Ray observatory, discovered M74 to be the home of a super massive black hole, tucked away in one of it's outer arms. This black hole is one of the largest ever discovered and has the mass of over 10,000 suns. The two bright blue clouds are NGC 6589 and NGC 6590. The clouds represent scattered starlight from two imbedded young blue stars. The two bright stars are part of a loose cluster known as NGC 6595. The diffuse magenta cloud is a complex HII region which absorbs the energy from the nearby bright stars and releases it in the visible red light of excited hydrogen. The HII clouds are known as IC 1283, IC 1284 and IC 4700. The bull is still a figure of strength and fertility in cultures around the world. In the sky the distinctive 'V' shape of his head and long horns tipped by beta (ss) and zeta Tau is easily recognised. If the purpose of the horns was in doubt, the English name for ss Tau is Alnath, meaning 'the butting one'. The bull's glowing red eye of Aldebaran completes the picture, and its location between the delicate Pleiades and the aggressive stance of Orion makes Taurus hard to overlook. Despite its masculine connotations, the constellation is rich in female icons; both the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters are daughters of Atlas and both are important astronomically. Constellation Scorpio - Milky way and constellation of Scorpius - Scorpius is one of the few constellations whose star pattern resembles its name. The curved stinging tail is marked by the star Shahula, probably from the Arabic 'Al Shaulah' meaning 'raised tail', as seen in a scorpion. In the body of the scorpion lies Antares, meaning 'rival of Mars' for its reddish colour. The head of the scorpion is echoed in the star name Dschubba, meaning 'forehead'.
