A small galaxy, IC 879, at the bottom of the picture, is probably interacting with it. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. NGC 5078 is a lenticular (lens - shaped) galaxy crossed by a distinct dusty band which is seen against the bright background of the galaxy itself. The dust lane is warped and broadened, probably by interaction with the faint companion galaxy IC 879, which is itself distorted into an 'S' shape by the interaction. The slightly bluish colour of parts of the fainter galaxy is suggestive of star formation, probably triggered by the interaction. Encounters between galaxies such as this are common, and often lead to them merging into a single entity. It contains about 500 stars, 150 of which are brilliant. It is about 300 million years old. The planetary nebula NGC 2438 (right) does not seem to belong to this cluster, and must be closer although its distance is unknown. M46 (NGC2437) is a rich open star cluster in the constellation Puppis. Within a diameter of 28 arc minutes, or about 30 light - years at its distance of 5400 light - years, M46 contains over 150 bright stars and a total population perhaps over 500. M46 is probably around 300 million years old. It is also noteworthy for the presence of the planetary nebula NGC 2438 on its northern edge (right of center). NGC 2438 is almost certainly not physically associated with M46 due to is probable evolutionary history, its significantly diffferent velocity, and a distance estimate only a little more than half the distan

NGC 2997 seems to be a galaxy seen from the front but in reality is inclined by about 45 degrees. Its arms are home to large star-forming regions while its core is surrounded by much older yellow stars. The disc of NGC 2997 is inclined at about 45 degrees to our line of sight, revealing its internal structure and giving the galaxy an oval appearance. Like most spirals, the galaxy has two prominent spiral arms, which appear to originate in the yellow nucleus, are peppered with bright red blobs of ionised hydrogen which are similar to regions of star formation in our own Milky Way. Galaxy clusters Abell 1060 in Hydra - The Hydra cluster of galaxies (Abell 1060) - The galaxy in the center is the spiral galaxy NGC 3312. To its right, the brightest elliptical galaxies of this cluster: NGC 3311. The two bright stars are closer and belong to our galaxy. This splendid cluster of galaxies in Hydra is framed by two nearby, cool stars in our own Milky Way. The brightest is about 5th magnitude, visible to the unaided eye only under a dark sky; the second brightest is below naked - eye visibility. In contrast the galaxies appear featureless in all but the largest telescopes. The bluish, elongated galaxy is an edge - on spiral, NGC 3312. It has been distorted by interactions with its neighbours. Heart of the nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene - Eta Carinae and the Keyhole Nebula - The nebula of the Carene is located about 7000 years - light from the Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the star Eta Carinae visible in the centre left of the image. Eta Carinae is a supermassive star (100 to 150 times the mass of the Sun). Cancer (the Crab) is a rather small constellation of 506 square degrees without any bright stars, however, the stick figure above strongly hints at a crab - like shape. The ecliptic runs through the middle of the main stars, which makes it one of the 12 zodiacal constellations. It is best seen in the early evening in March. The most obvious feature in the image above is the large open cluster Messier 44, also known as Praesepe, which appears to the unaided eye as a fuzzy patch. It is easly resolved into numerous faint stars in binoculars, hence its popular name, the Beehive cluster. Although inconspicuous, the constellation gave its name to the Tropic of Cancer. In ancient times Cancer was where the Sun appeared at its maximum mid - day elevation at the time of the (northern) summer solstice.
