Black hole collision in NGC 6240 - Black holes colliding in NGC 6240 - The galaxy NGC 6240, is located about 400 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus. This system consists of two colliding galaxies each with a central black hole; in several millions of years, they will form only one galaxy. A composite X-ray image (red, orange and yellow) and visible from the space telescopes Chandra and Hubble. This image of NGC 6240 contains X - ray data from Chandra (shown in red, orange, and yellow) that has been combined with an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope. In 2002, the discovery of two merging black holes was announced based on Chandra data in this galaxy. This German map of Liverpool dates back to the Second World War. It is one of a series of maps used by German bomber pilots in their night-time missions over Britain. Only the most obvious features are included on the map: towns, railway lines, major roads, woodland etc. The map's bright colours helped the pilots to pick out details at night - remember pilots would have had to read the maps in dark aeroplanes. Dock areas such as Portsmouth and Southampton were regular targets for the German Airforce, and were heavily bombed during the course of the war. On this map, the yellow circle surrounding the area just outside Oldham, is marked with the words 'Achtung. Deutsches Gefangenenlager in Oldham-Leeds'. This alerted the bomber pilots to a prisoner of war camp which was holding German soldiers - obviously an area that was to be avoided during the mission.
